Ah yes, the glorious year of 1977, a favorite of discerning Dead Heads for three decades now! For the second volume in our new Road Trips series, we’ve chosen another tour that was not tapped previously through Dick’s Picks—a blazing swing through the Southwest, Colorado and down to Louisiana during the first weeks of October 1977.

This was a great time for the band: Both the years-in-the-making Grateful Dead Movie and the new Terrapin Station album had come out a few months earlier and the group was riding high on momentum from both of those projects. There was exciting new material that had debuted at the beginning of the year, including “Estimated Prophet,” “Terrapin” and “Fire on the Mountain,” and steady touring through the spring allowed the band to really explore the nuances of the new repertoire, while they also continued to hone the material that had come in following the band’s return to the stage in mid-1976 after their hiatus. What you’ll find on these great-sounding discs is a mixture of old favorites played with that fabled ’77 energy, and more recent material that was hitting new peaks nightly. There’s a “Let It Grow” that will knock your tie-dyed socks off, one of the great versions of “Sugaree” of that or any year, the famous “Help on the Way > Slipknot! > Franklin’s Tower” from Norman, Oklahoma, epic workouts on “Playing in the Band” and “The Other One” and a jammed-out “Black Peter” for the ages. Hot stuff!

As always with Road Trips, if you order NOW (as they say on late-night TV), we will also include a 12-piece set of steak knives…no, wait a second, that’s not right. We’ll also include a special limited edition Bonus Disc with a dazzling plethora of other tunes from the same tour, including a wicked “Scarlet> Fire” (from Baton Rouge) and the group’s second-ever version of “Iko-Iko” (from “Al-be-ker-kay,” as Bugs Bunny called it).

One again, the discs have been lovingly compiled and painstakingly mastered (in HDCD) from the original master tapes (in this case reels) by Jeffrey Norman. The booklet that accompanies the CDs boasts scads of great photos from the era and a very cool historical essay by the ever-hip and erudite scribe Steve Silberman.

After listening to the 30 year anniversary show from Uptown 1/30-2/1 1978 this weekend. I surely hope Rhino will release all 3 shows in a box set format, instead of this best of stuff. That goes for many other quality run over the 30 years of playin'.
It seems to remove the vibe from the experience doing the cut and paste thing.

Ahhh the Uptown.

That venue, for the first few years of my Dead attendance, was home. Such a loss. The theatre now is in a complete state of disrepair.

There are attempts to revitalize this landmark, but it butts heads against what is truly a marginal neighborhood, which appears to fight against gentrification.

Meanwhile, the sound was great, the intimacy of the shows was amazing.

Yes, I'd love to get that Uptown run straight through...

A welcome release--and did I not say just a few days ago that it was time for another Road Trips assuming they are being released four per year?

But I see that if you want to hear the whole second set from 10-16, you play the first three tracks on the bonus disc followed by tracks 2-7 on disc 2. To quote Will Smith, "This definitely rates about a 9.0 on my weird-shit-o-meter." But in fairness to GDP, all nine tracks wouldn't quite have fit on one 80-minute disc.

Edit: over 78 minutes on each disc--gotta like that!

hmmmmmmmm

my stance on not buying any more dead discs may have reached a fork in the road with this release. granted i got those shows, but........ a commercial grade release like this just may have tipped my scales

thanks for the update

disk 1 is now up on the Dead.net site - for free.

I am, however, expecting the site to crash any minute now.

It's worth noting that the people you're calling idiots are not Rhino, since their brand doesn't even appear on the Road Trips releases and they aren't marketing the series. So your "idiots" would presumably be band members and/or vault archivists.

ah, i don't care who's in charge, it still sucks and i still want complete shows. yeah, i know many releases are compilations, but there is something pure about starting a show, beginning to end, getting the whole vibe, for good or bad. call me a purist, or a weirdo, but i know i'm not alone. i just picture all those pretty reels from 69 sittin there waiting to be cleaned up and released. that really excites me. then we get roadtrips!!!!!!!!!!!!

10-02 and 10-29 would deserve to get released as whole intact shows...

Right, but aren't they done doing that? Didn't they pull the plug on Dick's Picks? I guess if they exist as multi track they could wind up as Vault releases one day but considering the snail's pace involved there.
